15 Juli 2009 | Kenia, Nairobi
We spent 6 days in Mombasa. We spent it in a nice place called Word of Life. This is a place where there are camps for kids and they earn some extra cash in renting out cottages. We had a self catering place where we could rest before we started more travels.
Our time there was very good. We had air-conditioning in our bedroom (perfect for the hot nights), saw monkeys play on the grass just behind cottage and could swim in the ocean just a stone throw away. Next to all this we saw some places there filled with monkeys and ancient trees. Lovely.
We went to Mombasa by train. This was a fun and interesting experience, but we'll not do that again. It is the slowest way of travel. On our way back we had a delay of (only) 5 hours. This was due to the fact that the train did not arrive (out of Nairobi) at 10.00 (am) as planned, but at 20.00 (pm). Our train (the same one) should have left at 19.00 (pm). So the travellers in that train had a delay of about 8 hours. So our 5 hours were not that bad. Luckily we found some Danish couple to talk to and play games with. So the time passed a bit more quickly.
After arriving, we slept somewhere for the night and the next morning we got up really early to go on a safari (the animal one). We went with a few people we met in Kijabe. We would go for 2 nights. The first day we went to the Masai Mara (a big game park with lots of wild animals) and had a lunch at this amazing resort. It was so good and well equipped that we wondered how we could afford all that luxury. Somehow we could stay there for such a low price that we were totally happy. This place was great!
Anyway, we had a small drive later in the day and a terrific dinner. The next day we had a full day of driving to the park. We saw lots of animals (lions, giraffes, cheetahs, hippos, gazelles of all shapes and sizes, crocodiles, zebra, wildebeests and even a leopard) in those two drives. We didn't see the true migration, but we saw three groups of animals coming together to stand somewhere and discuss (I guess) where to go next. My guess would be it were about 600 wildebeests with a stray zebra here and there. It was nice to see that.
After our lovely safari, we went to Nairobi again to have a rest before we went on again to Eastern Kenya. We arrived there later in the day (on Monday) and were planning to leave on Wednesday very early morning. Our plans changed a bit after Nynke got sick. It's nothing to worry about, just a bug we guess, but we had to postpone our travels. So just a little more rest until we leave for Embu on the 16th. So apart from being forced to rest, we're doing good.
After some travelling, we'll post a new blog again. Enjoy!

Rachel:
Hey,
I just saw your blog pop in in my mailbox, what a blast! All the animals, must be truly amazing to see! Have a very good time, enjoy your hollidays over there and come back in good health (that's what they kept telling me, can be pretty annoying, I know :), but very true anyhow)! Is it winter or summer over there?? In Mozambique it's quite winterish right now, 25-30 celsius and coughing and sneezing people all around :)
Curious to see all your pics when you're back!
Be blessed, Rachel -

Oma En Opa:
Dus jullie hebben wetenschappelijk vastgesteld: "Dieren zijn net mensen". Was dat ook al niet vastgesteld in fabeltjes........
Geweldig wat jullie zien en meemaken!
With love , oma en opa.
